The NHL franchise Seattle Kraken just did something no other NHL team has done before.

Jessica Campbell will become the first woman to work on the bench of an NHL franchise after the Kraken hired her as an assistant coach Wednesday.

Campbell’s hockey career began as a player, where she excelled at multiple levels. She was a decorated NCAA athlete and competed in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, showcasing her skills and understanding of the game. Her talent earned her a spot on Canada’s women’s national team, where she reached the pinnacle of international competition, winning a silver medal at the 2015 World Championship.

After hanging up her skates in 2017, Campbell seamlessly transitioned into coaching, quickly establishing herself as a respected figure in player development. Her expertise as a skating coach garnered attention, leading to various opportunities to work with professional athletes.

In 2022, Campbell broke new ground by becoming the first full-time female assistant coach in the American Hockey League (AHL) when she joined the Coachella Valley Firebirds. In this role, she demonstrated her ability to develop young talent and build strong relationships with players, skills that would prove crucial in her ascent to the NHL.

Her coaching acumen extended beyond North America, as she served as an assistant coach for Germany during the 2022 IIHF World Championships. This international experience further broadened her coaching perspective and skill set.

Campbell’s effectiveness as a coach was evident in her work with key prospects like Tye Kartye, Shane Wright, and Ryker Evans during her time in the AHL. Her success in player development and her ability to connect with athletes were cited as significant factors in her NHL hiring.

At just 32 years old, Campbell has already amassed a wealth of experience and success in various hockey roles. Her appointment to the Kraken’s coaching staff is not merely a milestone for gender equality in sports, but a recognition of her substantial accomplishments and potential as a coach. Campbell brings with her a proven track record of success and a deep understanding of the game, positioning her to make significant contributions at the highest level of professional hockey.
