Fox News star Sean Hannity is an outspoken conservative. He’s a friend of former President Donald Trump. And he is known as a major force in Republican Party politics.
So when Hannity invited liberal activist and actor Sean Penn to his program on Tuesday, it stunned many of his fans.
Hannity revealed that he reached out to Penn to talk about the Ukraine war and his documentary of the invasion, which he filmed from the ground.
“I made the first phone call to you, I don’t know if you remember,” Hannity said. “Do you remember what you first said to me?”
“I do. I said I don’t trust you,” Penn responded.
“Is there a reason you don’t trust me?” Hannity responded.
“There are a lot of reasons I don’t trust you,” the liberal actor said. “But my trust, or your trust… we’ve got to get on with life. I’ve never felt this way about where our country is, and what I experienced emotionally in Ukraine.”
“We all talk about how divisive things are, how divided things are here,” Penn responded. “When you step into a country of such incredible unity, you realize what we’ve all been missing and I don’t think I’ve got time to indulge my lack of trust, which becomes a petty thing.”
“Babies are being vaporized,” Penn said about the war. “These people are fighting for the dreams and aspirations of all of us Americans.”
In a moment of goodwill, the two agreed that they don’t see eye to eye politically… but decided to move past that to discuss the Ukraine war and Penn’s documentary of the first days of fighting.
“You were there in November 2021. Why were you there originally to do a documentary?” Hannity asked.
Penn said he was originally in the country to profile President Volodymyr Zelensky, but during the build-up of Russian forces on the border his subject matter changed.
