Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was arrested Monday evening in Manhattan, marking a dramatic escalation in the legal troubles that have plagued the music icon in recent months.
Federal agents took Combs into custody at a New York hotel lobby, acting on a sealed indictment filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
While the specific charges remained under seal at the time of arrest, U.S. Attorney Damian Williams confirmed that Combs faces federal indictments related to sex trafficking and racketeering. The arrest follows a series of high-profile raids on Combs’ properties in Los Angeles and Miami on March 25, conducted by Homeland Security Investigations as part of an ongoing federal probe.
Multiple civil lawsuits have also been filed against Combs over the past year, alleging various forms of sexual abuse and misconduct. Most notably, his former girlfriend, singer Cassie, sued Combs in November and accused him of rape and physical abuse throughout their decade-long relationship. That suit was settled just a day after filing, but it opened the floodgates for additional accusers to come forward.
Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, expressed disappointment with the prosecution, describing it as “unjust” and said Combs’ have been cooperating with the investigation.
“Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, loving family man, and proven philanthropist,” Agnifilo stated, urging the public to reserve judgment until all facts are known.
The 58-year-old rapper and producer has consistently denied all allegations against him. In a December statement, Combs declared, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,” and said the accusations were attempts to “assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy.”
This arrest marks a significant fall from grace for Combs, who rose to prominence in the 1990s and became one of the central figures in the East Coast hip-hop scene. His empire expanded beyond music to include fashion, spirits, and media ventures, all of which now face uncertain futures.
The case against one of hip-hop’s most powerful figures promises to be closely watched, with implications that could reshape the landscape of the entertainment world.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is expected to unseal the indictment and provide more information in the coming days.
