Some mainstream media outlets are claiming the very unlikely: Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has reached out to Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign about endorsing her run for president.
RFK, Jr. reportedly wants a cabinet position in exchange for his support, claims The Washington Post.
According to the Post’s report, Kennedy is offering to drop out of the 2024 race and endorse Harris in exchange for a position in her administration, possibly at the Cabinet level.
Kennedy’s campaign reached out to Harris’s team last week, but the Vice President and her advisers claim to have shown no interest in the proposal.
Kennedy defended his approach in an interview Wednesday, stating, “From the beginning of this campaign, we were saying people should be talking to each other. That is the only way of unifying the country.”
The 70-year-old candidate argued that Harris’s lack of response was a “strategic mistake,” adding, “I think they ought to be looking at every opportunity. I think it is going to be a very close race.”
This outreach follows a similar meeting between Kennedy and Republican nominee Donald Trump in Milwaukee last month, where Kennedy reportedly discussed becoming an advisor for Trump, specifically on national health and medical issues, in a potential second term.
A Kennedy campaign spokesperson suggested openness to proposals from both parties, stating, “Mr. Kennedy is willing to meet with leaders of both parties to discuss the possibility of a unity government.”
Kennedy’s campaign has faced recent challenges, with his support dropping from a peak of 15% in November to 6% in a recent Fox News poll. The same poll indicated that Kennedy may be pulling slightly more support from Trump than from Harris.
Further complicating matters, a New York court recently ruled that Kennedy will not appear on the state’s ballots due to residency issues, potentially affecting his ballot access in other states.
Democratic strategists have criticized Kennedy’s efforts.
“No one has any intention of negotiating with a MAGA-funded fringe candidate who has sought out a job with Donald Trump in exchange for an endorsement,” Lis Smith, an adviser to the Democratic National Committee, told the Post.
Kennedy, for his part, claims minimal contact with the Democratic Party since launching his campaign.
“The only contact I have with the DNC is them suing me through intermediaries,” he said.
