In a stunning development that will reshape the 2024 presidential race, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s Independent campaign will soon join with former President Donald Trump — a major shift in a tight election.
“It’s a very big deal because we’re talking about an election that will be decided by inches on the electoral map,” Republican strategist Ford O’Connell told The Hill.
Previously rivals, Trump has recently expressed openness to Kennedy joining his team. Kennedy is widely expected to withdraw from the race Friday — and endorse his former rival.
“I like him, and I respect him. He’s a brilliant guy. He’s a very smart guy. I’ve known him for a very long time,” Trump said previously.
When asked about appointing Kennedy to an administration role, Trump added, “I probably would. I like him a lot. I respect him a lot.”
Behind the scenes, negotiations between the campaigns have intensified, and some of Kennedy’s team remains divided on how to proceed. One faction has advocated for an immediate endorsement, while another has pushed for specific concessions from Trump.
Kennedy also reportedly wants to bring members of his team into the Trump campaign, which could be a last-minute deal-breaker. Additionally, Kennedy’s wife, actress Cheryl Hines, is said to be strongly opposed to the idea of endorsing Trump.
The impact of such an endorsement on the race would be significant.
Recent polls show Harris and Trump virtually tied in a head-to-head match-up, but Kennedy’s exit could shift the dynamic. The Cook Political Report found that in swing states, 45% of Kennedy voters would support Trump in a two-way race, compared to 26% for Harris.
As both Kennedy and Trump prepare for separate events in Arizona on Friday, speculation is mounting about a potential joint appearance tonight.
Trump has said he would be “honored” by Kennedy’s endorsement, while the Kennedy campaign has simply announced that his upcoming speech will address “the present historical moment and his path forward.”
