Rob Reiner’s son comes clean on father’s brutal murder

Jake Reiner, the eldest son of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner, broke his silence Friday on the brutal murders of his parents and the fact that his own brother stands charged with killing them.

Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood, California home on December 14, 2025. Their son Nick Reiner was arrested the same day and charged with two counts of murder. He has pleaded not guilty. Nick is due back in court next week.

Jake, 32, came forward with an emotional account describing the moment he learned his parents were gone.

“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time. It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare,” he wrote.

Jake was in New York City when his sister Romy called to tell him their father was dead. Minutes later, a second call came — their mother was gone too.

“The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side was unendurable. My world, as I knew it, had collapsed. I was in a trance,” he wrote.

The night before the killings, Nick Reiner had gotten into an argument with his father at a holiday party and was seen acting erratically, according to reports. Nick had been living on his parents’ property at the time.

Nick had a long history of drug abuse and mental illness. He entered rehab for the first time at age 14 and cycled in and out of treatment facilities 18 times by 2016, also experiencing periods of homelessness. He was placed in a year-long mental health conservatorship in 2020. In 2015, Nick co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie — based on his struggles with addiction and his relationship with his father — which Rob directed.

Jake declined to speculate on motive, asking instead for patience and privacy.

“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” he wrote. “I understand that people have questions about what happened. Some of those answers will come in time. But some parts of this belong only to our family.”

He remembered his parents as the foundation of everything he is.

“They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them. They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world,” Jake wrote. “One thing I keep coming back to is how frightened they must have been.”

Rob Reiner was an outspoken Democratic donor and one of Hollywood’s most popular directors, known for This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men. He was also a prominent liberal political activist. He and Michele married in 1989.
