California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom has his eye on the White House in four or eight years—but before he can throw his hat in the ring, voters may throw him out on his ear.
Hundreds of thousands of people have signed a petition to recall Newsom as governor of California. That’s no surprise: Republicans have tried to recall him four times already.

The shock is this time they’re getting help from Newsom’s fellow Democrats, who want to cut the elitist governor out from around their necks…and maybe move into the governor’s mansion in Sacramento.
“We’ve gotten calls from Democrats who are already kicking the tires,’’ said one of the movement’s movers and shakers in an interview with Politico.
They’ve already collected 820,000 of the 1.5 million signatures necessary to put Newsom’s job up for a vote…and many of those come from registered Democrats sickened by how the governor has turned the Golden State to rust.
“Majorities of Californians across income groups think that children growing up in California today will be worse off financially than their parents,” said Mark Baldassare, CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California, a polling firm.
A whopping 58% of voters said they “expect periods of widespread unemployment or depression” in the next few years—and more than one in four is considering moving out of state.
653,000 people left California for other states in 2019, before the pandemic hit, while only 480,000 new people moved in—and there’s no word how many of those are U.S. citizens.

The cost of living is just too high, and good-paying jobs are too few. One couple told local news they hitched up the U-Haul after seeing their rent skyrocket from $1,300 to $2,000 a month in three years.
Newsom’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has only made things worse, and 38% of the state’s workers filed for bankruptcy this spring and summer.
To get their jobs back, they’re willing to fire Newsom from his.
This recall push has hefty financial support and is backed by the state’s Republican Party, including Congressmen Devin Nunes and David Valadao.
But look for more Democrats to pile on as soon as it becomes clear Newsom’s days in office are numbered.
“Don’t think Democrats won’t consider undermining Newsom if it comes to that,” Politico reported.

Republicans will need their help in a state where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans in California by 20 percentage points.
Luckily, they have it; Gavin Newsom rubs many Democrats as an out-of-touch elitist who’s ruining their party in the eyes of the voters.
He created a major public relations faux pas after he banned California residents from dining at restaurants—and even told them to wear a mask “in between bites” at home—but then was caught at the gourmet French Laundry restaurant with no mask, sitting so close he almost literally rubbed elbows with lobbyists from the state’s medical industry.
“This governor is his own worst enemy, and every day he does something more that puts him deeper and deeper into controversy,” said Recall Gavin Newsom senior adviser Randy Economy. “He’s become a problem here in California.”
“He shut down the fifth-largest economy in the world the last nine months, and every single person out there in California should be outraged by that,” he said.
Newsom has closed small businesses, blamed his state’s annual wildfires on Donald Trump, limited how many people Californians can have at parties or Thanksgiving celebrations, and banned people from going to gyms, small businesses, or church.

But Hollywood—and Newsom’s own richly producing vineyards and wine industry—are open for business, classified by Newsom as “essential” industries.
The governor also has a penchant for putting his foot in his mouth—or being a little too honest about his intentions.
On April Fool’s Day, he told a reporter that he “absolutely” sees the coronavirus as an “opportunity for reimagining a [more] progressive era as it [relates] to capitalism” and “to reshape the way we do business and how we govern.”
Most Californians don’t want a governor to use the worst year of their lives to rig the political system for himself and his left-wing friends…and even many Democrats are ready to toss him out of office.
History may not be on Newsom’s side, either: The only successful recall of a governor happened in California in 2003, when voters replaced Democrat Gray Davis with its last Republican governor to date, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In the election, 135 candidates ran to replace Davis… and that was before social media took off. Politico reported more than 1,000 candidates could be on the ballot in this recall election.
When voters threw out the state’s top elected Democrat in 2003, countless Democrats rushed to take his job—and many of Newsom’s outward supporters would secretly like that chance this year, too.
