Former Vice President Joe Biden is refusing to rule out anything in the 2020 presidential campaign — and reports indicate he’s even considering naming a rising Republican moderate as his running mate.
According to The Hill, the shortlist for potential Republicans for Biden includes, “Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Vermont Governor Phil Scott, and former Ohio Governor John Kasich, the man who refused to be on the ticket with Trump, much to the consternation with Trump.”
When asked directly about naming a Republican as his running mate earlier this week, Biden has refused to rule out the idea — but doesn’t want to name names.
“The answer is I would, but I can’t think of one now,” he said when asked at a recent campaign stop.
“No, I’m serious [about a Republican running mate],” Biden told the crowd. “There are some really decent Republicans that are out there still, but here’s the problem right now with the well-known ones: they’ve got to step up. Do you know what I mean? I’m not being a wise guy.”
Biden said it was “presumptuous” to talk running mate before he’d won the primary, but said his vice president would need to be sympathetic to his causes.
“Whomever I would pick for vice president – and there’s a lot of qualified women, there’s a lot of qualified African-Americans, there really, truly are — whomever I would pick here I fortunate enough to be your nominee, I’d pick someone who was simpatico with me, who knew what my priorities were and knew what I wanted to do,” Biden said.
Of course, not everyone is convinced Biden is telling the truth about a GOP running mate.
“When Biden says stuff like this, it’s a low-cost way of trying to appeal to 1) the small group of GOP-leaning voters who are persuadable and 2) the much larger group of voters who hate how bitter and angry politics has become,” Vox’s Ezra Klein wrote. “Maybe it works, maybe not, but that’s the play.”
