Federal investigators believe they have enough evidence to charge Hunter Biden with tax crimes and for the illegal possession of a firearm, according to a bombshell report Thursday by The Washington Post.

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, acknowledged the federal probe into his finances in December 2020.

The investigation first began in 2018 and centered around Hunter’s foreign business dealings and consulting work while his father was vice president.

Biden’s rivals in the Republican Party have long complained that their questions about the president’s son have gone unanswered. They have questioned whether Hunter abused his family’s powerful political connections and enriched himself with his father’s blessing.

The FBI’s multi-year investigation into Hunter later evolved into a two-part probe: Potential tax crimes, and whether Hunter made a knowingly false statement related to a gun purchase — a serious crime.

According to The Washington Post report —

Over time, investigators with multiple agencies focused closely on whether he did not report all of his income, and whether he lied on gun purchase paperwork in 2018, according to the people familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing case.

Agents determined months ago they had assembled a viable criminal case against the younger Biden. But it is ultimately up to prosecutors at the Justice Department, not agents, to decide whether to file charges in cases where prosecutors believe the evidence is strong enough to lead to a likely conviction at trial.

Because of the political sensitivity of the investigation, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has recused himself from the investigation.

That leaves the decision on whether to charge Hunter in the hands of the U.S. Attorney David Weiss in Delaware, who has yet to reveal his plans.

Weiss was appointed to his office by former President Donald Trump in 2017.

According to Fox News, a former official with insider connections said a decision to charge Hunter was “imminent.”

Attorney Chris Clark, who represents Hunter, lashed out at the reported leak.

“It is a federal felony for a federal agent to leak information about a grand jury investigation such as this one,” he said in a  statement.

“Any agent you cite as a source in your article apparently has committed such a felony,” Clark’s statement continued. ” We expect the Department of Justice will diligently investigate and prosecute such bad actors.”
