In August, New York Attorney General Letitia James, D, reported on years of allged misconduct by former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Her report on the sexual misconduct destroyed Cuomo’s career.
On Monday, James went public with some previously unreleased material, more than a hundred pages’ worth of emails, text messages, and court transcripts… and it could cost CNN newscaster Chris Cuomo, the governor’s brother, everything.
Chris Cuomo had previously admitted to advising his brother, but his job was spared by CNN. Now, according to the new evidence, it appears he did much more than just advising.
Rather, he pressed for greater involvement in crafting his brother’s message, and he and offered up his CNN contacts to find out what other allegations might be looming.
He told investigators in July, “As the situation started to accelerate, my brother asked me to be in the loop.”
In one exchange, Chris Cuomo berated his brother’s aides for handling the accusations too clumsily.
On March 4, Chris Cuomo texted the governor’s top aide, Melissa DeRosa, saying “I have a lead on the wedding girl,” referring to a woman who accused his brother of unwanted sexual touching at a wedding reception.
On March 7, as rumors swirled that more women were about to come forward, DeRosa texted Chris Cuomo: “Can u check your sources.” He replied, “On it.”
“When asked, I would reach out to sources, other journalists, to see if they had heard of anybody else coming out,” Chris Cuomo said in a deposition from July.
In one instance, Chris Cuomo admitted to calling a coworker of Ronan Farrow, the reporter known for breaking the Harvey Weinstein rape story. Cuomo admitted to asking about Farrow’s upcoming article without telling anyone at CNN. He kept DeRosa updated on the status of Farrow’s article.
In a March 10 text message, Chris Cuomo lashed out at DeRosa, accusing her of keeping information from his brother after the Albany Times-Union published an interview with an accuser.
“Stop hiding s*** ,” Chris Cuomo wrote. “We are making mistakes we can’t afford.”
Even CNN can’t help but face the facts about this compromised relationship.
CNN representative Matt Dornic spoke to USA Today about Cuomo’s future at the network and said the network was evaluating their relationship.
“The thousands of pages of additional transcripts and exhibits that were released today by the NY Attorney General deserve a thorough review and consideration,” he said in a statement. “We will be having conversations and seeking additional clarity about their significance as they relate to CNN over the next several days.”
Chris Cuomo didn’t mention the attorney general’s report during his broadcast on Monday night. On air in August, he said, “I tried to do the right thing.”
Since Monday, he’s faced serious accusations of breaching journalistic ethics.
Jane Kirtley, director of the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law at the University of Minnesota, said journalists must understand they’re working for the public, not politicians.
Kirtley said the extent of Chris Cuomo’s involvement in advising his brother is inappropriate, and since they’re brothers, “Maybe it’s time for him to find another line of work.”
She urged CNN to address the matter promptly, saying: “You can’t act like this is not happening. You’re a news organization.”
Amid the scandal, James has boosted her reputation even as Cuomo has tarnished his.
She launched her own campaign for governor… but she has also faced accusations of cynical career-climbing.
“To the surprise of no one, Tish James continues abusing her government power to leverage her political future — prosecutorial misconduct, ethics and integrity be damned,” Richard Azzopardi, a spokesman for the former governor, said in a statement Monday.
James announced her gubernatorial campaign in October, joining a hotly contested and increasingly crowded race.
