Just days after President-elect Donald Trump suggested changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wants to make it a reality.
On Thursday, she introduced a bill to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
“The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted. Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries,” Greene wrote in a statement on the social platform X.
“It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America, and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as.”

However, the suggested name change has not been welcomed by Mexican officials.
According to The Hill, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum immediately hit back with her own play on words suggesting North America be labeled as “América Mexicana” or “Mexican America.”
But Trump’s idea has officially gained momentum with the help of Greene.
“Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously and that means acting fast to enact it. This is a piece of Day 1 legislation that can easily be awaiting President Trump’s signature the moment he takes his oath of office,” she added in her statement.
“I urge my colleagues to join me to quickly pass this bill.”
