The FDA elevated its recall of Kirkland Signature eggs sold at Costco to its highest alert level due to potential salmonella contamination. About 260,000 eggs distributed to 25 stores across five southeastern states are affected.
The recalled eggs reached stores in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee starting November 22. Handsome Brook Farms indicated the eggs “were not intended for retail distribution.”
Consumers should check for Julian code 327 and a January 5, 2025 use-by date on cartons. Affected eggs should be discarded or returned to stores for refunds. No illnesses have been reported.
Salmonella typically causes fever, diarrhea and stomach cramps within six hours to six days of exposure. While most recover without treatment in 4-7 days, severe cases require medical attention, particularly for:
- Those with fevers above 102 degrees
- Diarrhea lasting more than three days
- Signs of dehydration
- Adults over 65
- Children under 5
- People with weakened immune systems
