Rachel Maddow’s current contract with MSNBC will expire sometime in 2022.
After that, insiders say her nightly show will come to an end.
Instead, she will host something like a weekly show, CNN reported. Her presence on primetime television may become unrecognizable.
Earlier this month, she reportedly wanted to spend more time on her personal life and escape the demands of a live, nightly, primetime broadcast, a source told The Daily Beast.
She reportedly expressed interest in leaving MSNBC for either a podcast, a newsletter, or a different network.
She was courted by media giants like Netflix, Spotify, WarnerMedia, and Disney, according to Axios. However, she ultimately extended her contract with MSNBC, Insider reported on Aug. 21.
Maddow’s agent Mark Shapiro spoke to Insider and described the new contract as “a much broader deal at NBCUniversal.”
She will maintain a regular presence on MSNBC, but now she can make more room for other projects — and potentially earn more money.
NBC Universal, MSNBC’s parent company, is pouring money into streaming. It recently launched the streaming service Peacock.
Axios wrote, “As the definitions of media, content, distributions and platforms all change, the Maddow brand now has more outlets than ever.”
However, MSNBC has not chosen anyone to fill Maddow’s timeslot yet. Maddow has no obvious successor, as The Daily Beast points out.
She closed her deal on Friday, according to The Wall Street Journal. As of Aug. 22, no one has reported on the financial details of Maddow’s deal yet.
