House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attended the Kennedy Center Honors event in Washington, D.C. this weekend, with her husband Paul.
Paul Pelosi, 82, took a hammer to the skull during a home invasion in October. On Sunday, he appeared in public for the first time since the attack. He wore a hat and one glove.
Nancy Pelosi described her husband’s recovery as “coming along,” according to Fox News. In the past, she’s given updates on her husband’s condition, including “serious injuries to his right arm and hands” and “successful surgery to repair a skull fracture.”
“His doctors expect a full recovery,” her office said in an October statement. The House speaker has cited the attack as one reason for her retirement from party leadership.
At the event, Paul Pelosi himself told the Daily Mail that he was faring “very well.” He made the remark while chatting with other guests after the show.
Breaking from tradition, the Pelosi family didn’t walk the red carpet this year, according to the Mail. Still, Paul Pelosi commanded a standing ovation inside the Kennedy Center’s Opera House.
Sunday’s event honored patrons of the arts. Multi-millionaires like Nancy Pelosi can benefit themselves financially by donating to museums, nonprofits, and other tax-deductible organizations.
The event was taped Sunday, and it will air Dec. 28 on CBS.
