A Texas Republican congressional candidate has chided “Saturday Night Live” comic Pete Davidson for poking fun at the eyepatch he wears because he was badly wounded during his third tour in Afghanistan as a Navy SEAL.
During Saturday’s “Weekend Update” segment, Davidson said that Dan Crenshaw was “kinda cool” but that viewers might be “surprised he’s a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hit man in a porno movie.”
Crenshaw shot back on Twitter saying, he hopes that Davidson and NBC recognize “vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used a punchlines for bad jokes.”
On Saturday night after Davidson stirred up controversy by poking fun at Crenshaw’s eyepatch, he made matters worse after saying, “I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or whatever.”
Crenshaw, who is running against Democrat Todd Litton for an open suburban Houston district seat, replied in a tweet on Sunday, saying: “Good rule in life: I try hard not to offend; I try harder not to be offended. That being said, I hope @nbcsnl recognizes that vets don’t deserve to see their wounds used as punchlines for bad jokes.”

Crenshaw also spoke with TMZ on Sunday and said that he does not believe that NBC or Davidson owe him an apology.”I want us to get away from this culture where we demand apologies everytime someone misspeaks,” Crenshaw said. “I think that would be very healthy for our nation to go in that direction.”
“We don’t need to be outwardly outraged. I don’t need to demand apologies from them. They can do whatever they want.”
Crenshaw added that NBC and Davidson are most likely “feeling the heat from around the country right now.”
The GOP congressional candidate concluded that Davidson should be ashamed about his joke because, “[I]t wasn’t even funny. Right? It was not original, it was not funny, it was just mean-spirited and that’s how I feel about it.”
