Reports from Germany say that angry leftist protesters have surrounded the hotel where Melania Trump is staying Friday, effectively trapping her inside.
Police said it was unsafe for Melania to perform her duties as first lady while President Donald Trump meets with world leaders in Hamburg for the “Group of 20” economic summit because the angry mob had virtually taken over the streets surrounding her hotel.
This is how our NATO ally, who just 70 years ago the United States spent billions rebuilding and protecting from the Soviet Union, welcome guests to their country?
Liberal rioters set dozens of cars ablaze and tried to block every national delegation from entering the summit as the meeting got underway Friday. Police later tweeted that all the world leaders attending the summit made it safely to the city’s convention center, where the event is taking place.
None of the violent activists managed to push into the no-go zone police established around the gathering, authorities said.
The leaders, including host German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and many others, were to discuss issues such as fighting international terrorism and the escalating North Korean tensions, but also to tackle some contentious topics such as international trade agreements.
Early Friday, rioters shot fireworks at a police helicopter and only narrowly missed it, police said. Windows at the Mongolian consulate were also broken and the tires of a car belonging to the Canadian delegation were also punctured.
Skirmishes took place across the city as protesters roamed around, hunting for victims. Later in the day, masked demonstrators put up barricades in the city’s Altona neighborhood and threw gas bombs at police.
Leftist protest leaders have dubbed their violence a “welcome to hell” for world leaders, who are gathering to discuss their country’s relationships.
To her credit, Melania has remained seemingly unfazed through her ordeal. Friday morning she tweeted —
Thinking of those hurt in #Hamburg protests. Hope everyone stay safe! #G20
