Former Foreign Minister Liz Truss was confirmed as the Conservative Party’s new leader Tuesday, automatically becoming the U.K.’s new prime minister.
On Twitter, @Liztruss has become very active. There’s only one problem. That account doesn’t belong to Truss.
Rather, the @Liztruss account belongs to another person going by the name Liz Trussel. Meanwhile, the prime minister uses the handle @trussliz.
@Liztruss looks largely inactive. The account doesn’t show any tweets between February 2018 and this month. The account didn’t even “like” any tweets between January 2020 and June 2022.
Still, Trussel has been receiving tweets meant for Truss… and she’s been having fun with it.
On Twitter, Sweden’s prime minister accidentally congratulated @Liztruss, not @trussliz. Trussel replied, “Looking forward to a visit soon! Get the Meatballs ready.”
On Tuesday, one user was tweeting about Truss’s speech surrounding her meeting with the queen.
The observer tweeted, “Excellent speech by @liztruss.” Trussel replied, “Thanks doll.”
Trussel has tweeted about charitable causes in southeast England, and she appears to live in the U.K.
She isn’t the first person to be mixed up with a world leader.
In 2010, the socialite Kate Middleton was preparing to marry Prince William and join the U.K.’s royal family.
However, this Kate Middleton shared a name with another Kate Middleton, an employee at a bicycle shop in Massachusetts.
Like Trussel, the American Kate Middleton played along with the confusion. She drew on name recognition to promote fitness classes at her bicycle shop.
“ATA Cycle spin class starts Thursday, Jan. 6,” Middleton said Twitter in 2010. “Don’t miss your chance to have the future Queen of England whip you into shape.”
The American Kate Middleton was reportedly suspended from Facebook for using a “fake” name.
Trussel, by contrast, remains on Twitter.
