Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., took time out from her feud with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to announce a new plan.
Ocasio-Cortez said that abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) doesn’t go far enough.
She wants to abolish the entire Department of Homeland Security — which oversees huge parts of the U.S. Government, including the United States Coast Guard, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), United States Customs and Border Protection, and the U.S. Secret Service.
“ICE isn’t under the [Department of Justice],” Ocasio-Cortez explained in an interview with The New Yorker radio show.
“It’s under the Department of Homeland Security,” she said.
“Would you get rid of Homeland Security, too?” host David Remnick asked.
“I think so. I think so,” Ocasio-Cortez responded. “I think we need to undo … a lot of the egregious mistakes the Bush administration did.”
“I feel like we’re at a very qualified and supported position, at least in terms of evidence and in terms of being able to make the argument, that we should’ve never created DHS in the early 2000s,” she said.
There are more than 240,000 employees under DHS, making it the third largest Cabinet department under the White House. Only the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) are larger.
According to The Daily Wire, Ocasio-Cortez’ call to abolish DHS would eliminate the following government agencies —
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
- United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP)
- Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
- Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC)
- United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
- United States Secret Service (USSS)
- Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
- Management Directorate
- Science and Technology Directorate
- Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office
- Office of Intelligence and Analysis
- Office of Operations Coordination
Critics blasted Ocasio-Cortez’ plan and called it reflective of “absolute irresponsibility.”
“They undertake fundamental cyber intel operations for the nation, Secret Service is part of the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security. It is a crucial agency and a crucial set of operations that keep this nation, keep our citizens safe,” Rep. Liz Cheney, R-W.Y., said.

Later, Ocasio-Cortez was asked what a “sane” immigration policy would look like.
Ocasio-Cortez replied that no one should ever be detained or arrested for crossing into the United States… even if they’re caught entering the country illegally.

She implied that America was to blame for illegal immigration, and said we haven’t been good enough neighbors with Latin America.
“We should not be using detention for people who have harmed no one,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“The United States has completely abdicated its responsibility and role in Latin America … we are not acting like an equal partner or neighbor in the western hemisphere,” she added.
