Ocasio-Cortez’ harebrained stunt backfired Wednesday

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has shared some dim-witted thoughts and demands on social media in the past — but none have backfired quite as badly as her complaints about her grandmother’s apartment on Wednesday.

Ocasio-Cortez was overwhelmed with criticism after she took to Twitter to highlight her thoughts on storm-ravaged Puerto Rico and how it has impacted her family.

Specifically, she blamed former President Donald Trump for her grandmother’s poor situation.

“Just over a week ago, my abuela fell ill. I went to Puerto Rico to see her- my 1st time in a year+ bc of COVID,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote when sharing a picture of her grandmother’s apartment with a collapsing roof and little furniture.

“This is her home. Hurricane María relief hasn’t arrived. Trump blocked relief $ for PR. People are being forced to flee ancestral homes, & developers are taking them.”

Critics pounced.

The Democratic Socialist currently rents two luxury apartments, drives an expensive car, comes from a wealthy family, and has a salary of $174,000 a year — over three times larger than that of the average U.S. worker.

Critics said it’s shameful that Ocasio-Cortez hasn’t bothered to help her grandmother in the nearly four years since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico.

Ocasio-Cortez and her defenders said her tweet was taken out of context. But that didn’t stop the backlash.

Shameful that you live in luxury while allowing your own grandmother to suffer in these squalid conditions

— Matt Walsh (@MattWalshBlog) June 2, 2021

“AOC went and bought herself a Tesla while her grandmother lives in a shack with a collapsing ceiling,” Walsh continued. “It never fails with these champagne socialists. They expect everyone else to make sacrifices while making none themselves.”

“You need to help her!” Newsbusters Chris Houck responded.

“Honey, you drive a Tesla and have two apartments,” Lauren Spicer said. “If your grandmother is living poor that’s because you don’t help her out. I’m surprised that a socialist wouldn’t redistribute that wealth to their grandma. Sad!”

“You live in luxury now that you make a ton of money and you don’t help your grandma?” another social media user replied. “That’s cruel.”

“What kind of person lets their grandmother live like this when you make 170k,” wrote another.

“Sell your Tesla! You should be ashamed for letting her live like this. We have a responsibility to care for our elders!” one person said.

What do you think about the AOC tweet?

Is Trump to blame? Should Ocasio-Cortez do more to help her family? Or was this all taken out of context?
