A team of American researchers says ground-penetrating radar scans at a mysterious, ancient site in Turkey have revealed a network of underground tunnels that appear to match the Bible’s description of Noah’s Ark.
The Durupınar Formation, which has perplexed scientists for decades, sits 18 miles south of Mount Ararat — Turkey’s highest peak.
It matches the location the Bible identifies as the resting place of the Ark after a 150-day flood. The latest findings from Noah’s Ark Scans, an independent research group, are among the most detailed yet.
Lead researcher Andrew Jones used ground-penetrating radar to map a series of corridors converging on a hollow central chamber he calls the atrium. He believes the layout matches the Bible’s account of the Ark’s three internal levels, built to shelter Noah, his family, and pairs of animals.
“What’s interesting is that these voids are lining up below the ground — and they’re not just random,” Jones told GB News. “These tunnels also follow a pattern.”
The team also used a heat-sensing technology that detects hidden underground structures, and found evidence there could have once been a ship-shaped hull buried deep in the soil.
In 2024, Jones and his team collected 88 soil samples from inside and outside the formation. Testing revealed extremely high levels of potassium, consistent with massive amounts of decomposed wood. Angular structures were detected as deep as 20 feet below the surface, which Jones says could represent rooms beneath a deck-like platform.
“This is not what you’d expect to see if the site were simply a solid block of rock or the result of random mudflow debris,” Jones told the Christian Broadcasting Network. “But it is exactly what you’d expect to find if this were a man-made boat, consistent with the biblical specifications of Noah’s Ark.”
Colleague William Crabtree added that a separate tunnel runs from the tip of the formation toward its center — and is large enough to walk through.
According to the Bible, the Ark measured 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high — roughly 515 feet long, 86 feet wide, and 52 feet tall. The Durupınar Formation closely matches those dimensions.
The site was unknown to the modern world until 1948, when heavy rains and earthquakes washed away surrounding mud, exposing the formation. A Kurdish shepherd discovered it shortly after.
Many scientists maintain the formation is a naturally occurring geological feature.
The Noah’s Ark Scans team plans to conduct core drilling and insert cameras into the voids in a future expedition to gather deeper evidence.
“Whatever happens, whenever God opens doors, we will continue working on the site,” Jones said.
