Japanese video game company Nintendo has announced that it will reveal information about a successor to its popular Switch home console sometime before March 2025.
The announcement came during the company’s financial results report, although no specific details were provided about the timing of the launch or the nature of the new product.
Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, stated, “We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015.” This statement has left fans eagerly anticipating what the next generation of Nintendo gaming will bring.
The company reported a 13% increase in profit for the fiscal year ending in March, largely due to strong demand for Switch software titles like “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” which sold 20.6 million units globally. Other top-selling games included “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” with 13.4 million units and “Pikmin 4” with nearly 3.5 million units sold. The success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” also contributed to the company’s growth.
Nintendo’s net profit for the fiscal year through March 2024 reached 490.6 billion yen ($3 billion), while annual sales rose 4% to 1.67 trillion yen ($11 billion). The company benefited from the weak yen against the dollar, which increased the value of its overseas earnings.
Looking ahead, Nintendo forecasts a lower net profit of 300 billion yen ($1.9 billion) for the fiscal year through March 2025.
The company has sold more than 141 million Switch consoles, with 15.7 million units sold in the most recent fiscal year.
To maintain interest, Nintendo plans to release new games such as “Endless Ocean Luminous” and “Luigi’s Mansion 2,” as well as open a Donkey Kong Country attraction at Universal Studios Japan and a Nintendo museum in Kyoto later this year.
