Former House Speaker Newt Gringrich surprised everyone when he announced the clear winner of Tuesday’s Democratic debate.
Gingrich told Fox News the winner was clear: President Donald Trump.
“I thought it was a really good night for Donald Trump,” Gingrich said. “He could hardly have hoped for a better debate. You had a handful of rational moderates … and their soundbites are perfect and could replace probably half of the Trump ads for next year, because they come out and tell the truth: This stuff is crazy!”
“I was really struck by personalities; you have Bernie Sanders, who has become very angry,” he told Fox & Friends. “I don’t know if he’s frustrated, or what’s going on… but he really was a little bit like the angry uncle that showed up at Thanksgiving, and no one wanted to set him off, because he started waving his arms and yelling.”
“The American people got a chance to see who the Democratic Party is right now, because you had people who are moderate or to the left-of-center, and then you had some super left … with fairy tale ideas,” Fox News host Steve Doocy said.
“I think it will be interesting to watch the evolution of the next couple months, because the core of the Democratic Party right now is very, very far left,” Gingrich said. “They’re almost irrationally anti-Trump, to the point where they just want to stand around and chant and scream.”
“Pointing out, for example, that taking away health insurance from 180 million people is not very smart. Pointing out that decriminalizing crossing the border, so you have no controls, while also tax-paid healthcare for illegal immigrants isn’t very smart,” he said.
“Whether inside the Democratic Party, there’s enough of a base of people with common sense … looking at the polling data, the gap between self-identified Democrats, and Independents and Republicans, is huge,” Gingrich added.
“The challenge you’ve got is that among the most active Democrats, they’re so polarized now that they say things that, if you think about it, are totally irrational,” he said.
“We have the governor of California, our biggest state, actively in favor of free healthcare … for illegal immigrants,” he said.
“The entire program that [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] and the other radicals produced about the environment … when you actually start reading it, they want to abolish … airplanes!”
“You go down the list with these kinds of things, on the left, it’s this mantra or chant,” Gingrich said. “You say it, you feel better, it has no meaning – and then they say, ‘Oh, by the way, we’ll do all of this without raising our taxes.’”
