NBC News star, 77, faces calls to retire after on-air ‘senior moment’

Andrea Mitchell, 77, has been with NBC Universal since 1978… but her latest “senior moment” has viewers calling for her retirement.

On air recently, Mitchell forgot the name of one of her guests.

At the time, Mitchell was helming MSNBC’s round-the-clock coverage of former President Donald Trump’s legal woes.

“I’ve been talking to Paul Butler,” Mitchell said. “And… and… uhhh…”

The other guest interrupted her to say his name, Marcus Childress.

Mitchell has struggled with words on air before.

“The difference here is that these 31 specific, uhhh, counts,” Mitchell said June.

“Uhhh, these counts had nothing to do with what, 37 counts, but they had nothing to do with more than 100 other — other — these documents that were held and retained by him.”

Was she trying to say that a prosecutor used his discretion to file only some of the possible charges? In any case, Mitchell became a trending topic after this slip-up.

“Andrea Mitchell sounds as lost and confused as Biden,” one viral tweet said. Another person mentioned an instance of Mitchell apparently falling asleep on live TV.

Some viewers have speculated — without evidence — that Mitchell may be clicking because of some ill-fitting dentures.

“I don’t know if it’s because her dentures don’t fit well or if she has dry mouth, but listening to her segments makes me murderously angry. I’ve tried to ignore it, but the constant lip smacking is just too much,” one Reddit user said in a viral post from 2022.

“Please, MSNBC, give her a push to talk mic or a lozenge or something.”

A year later, the same Reddit user described the remark as “overly harsh” but also acknowledged Mitchell’s “pauses and word-fumbles.”

Mitchell hasn’t been MSNBC’s only host to mangle her words lately. Rachel Maddow exaggeratedly gagged when talking about Trump’s relationship with one NFL star.
