Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, was hospitalized Friday after falling down stairs during an official engagement in Luxembourg, where she was participating in ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
“While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation,” spokesperson Ian Krager said in a statement.
Though a source told The Daily Mail that despite being rushed to the hospital, the 84-year-old Pelosi’s injuries are not serious. However, she has canceled all her remaining engagements on the congressional trip.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” Krager said. “She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements.”
The bipartisan delegation of nearly 20 lawmakers, led by current Speaker Mike Johnson, R-L.A., was meeting with foreign leaders to commemorate one of World War II’s deadliest battles.
“In the early hours of December 16, 1944, 80 years ago, Nazi Germany waged a surprise attack against the Allied powers,” Johnson said. “The Battle of the Bulge exemplified the tenacity and determination of U.S. and Allied forces.”
The incident follows Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell’s fall during a Senate lunch earlier this week, where the 82-year-old suffered a sprained wrist and facial cut.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi was personally and officially honored to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II — including her uncle, Johnny,” Krager noted. “She looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.”
Pelosi, who stepped down from Democratic leadership in November 2022 but recently won reelection and plans to run again in 2026, maintains significant influence in Congress despite no longer holding a formal leadership position.
She has recently been feuding with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., over the future of the Democratic Party.
