There’s a civil war brewing inside the Democratic Party between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.
And Pelosi is using the mainstream media to take on the freshman lawmaker.
During an interview on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday night, Pelosi took a well-aimed shot at Ocasio-Cortez and her political allies in the House.
After correspondent Lesley Stahl asked about different groups within the House Democratic caucus, Pelosi went on the attack.
“You have these wings… AOC and her group on one side,” Stahl said.
Pelosi interrupted: “That’s just, like, five people.”
“The progressive group is more than five,” Stahl responded.
“Well, I’m progressive… I’m a progressive, so yeah,” Pelosi said.
In the world of high stakes Congressional politics, using a high-profile interview to attack rebellious members of one’s own political party is a very serious insult.
It’s even more serious considering this is the third insult Pelosi has fired at Ocasio-Cortez in recent weeks.
“While there are people who have a large number of Twitter followers, what’s important is that we have large numbers of votes on the floor of the House,” Pelosi said when asked about her Democratic colleagues.
Earlier in the year, Pelosi also used the media to attack the Green New Deal — a bill co-authored by Ocasio-Cortez.

“It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive,” Pelosi said of Ocasio Cortez’ signature bill. “The green dream, or whatever they call it… nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it, right?”
The message is clear: Pelosi wants Ocasio-Cortez to get in line.
The freshman socialist may have a large social media following, but Pelosi still has friends in high places in the establishment order.
And she’s using the oldest trick in the establishment Democrats’ playbook — using the mainstream media to do the dirty work.
