While most of America spent Memorial Day weekend at backyard cookouts and beach trips, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo. was busy making the rounds on political talk shows.
On Sunday, Cheney went on ABC News to talk about President Donald Trump — and what she said shook up Washington, D.C.
“We had people that are at the highest levels of our law enforcement … saying that they were going to stop a duly elected president of the United States,” Cheney said.
“I think what is really crucially important to remember here is that you had [former FBI agents Peter] Strzok and [Lisa] Paige who were in charge of launching this investigation and they were saying things like we must stop this president, we need an insurance policy against this president,” she said.
“That sounds an awful lot like a coup — and it could well be treason,” Cheney added.
“That is something that simply cannot happen,” she said. “We have to have confidence in our law enforcement, and the attorney general has got to get to the bottom of what happened — how it was that these people were allowed to misuse and abuse their power that way.”
The statement got the attention of Trump, who has argued for years that he was mistreated by former President Barack Obama’s administration.
Trump retweeted the clip on Sunday, and the statement quickly went viral.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made a similar statement over the weekend.
“We already know that there was an outrageous amount of corruption that took place at the F.B.I,” Sanders said on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
“They leaked information. They lied,” Sanders said. “They were specifically working trying to take down the president, trying to hurt the president.”
