At least five people were killed Monday in a mass shooting at a youth welfare center in the northern German town of Stade, near Hamburg, police said.

The shooting occurred around midday, according to police. Two people have been detained, including the suspected shooter.

Authorities haven’t released the motive, and refused to even release the nationality of the shooter and the other detainee.

A police spokesperson told Reuters the role of the second detainee remains unclear. Authorities also reported additional injuries from the incident but have not released a specific number.

“Homicides involving multiple victims occurred at a youth welfare facility,” the police said in a statement. “Five people were fatally injured and additional individuals sustained injuries.”

Police launched a major operation in the area and urged residents to stay away while the scene was secured.

Yet no information on a motive has been released, and the identities of the victims and suspects have not been made public.

Another outbreak of violence in Europe.
