In a tumultuous start to the trial proceedings, a man was taken into custody by court officers after causing a disturbance in the overflow courtroom. The individual had been admitted to the room, which is located adjacent to the main courtroom, but refused to comply with the court’s rules, including sitting down as instructed. As a result, officers escorted him off the floor in handcuffs just moments after the hearing began.
Court staff have warned journalists and members of the public about the consequences of violating the rules in the overflow room, where a slightly delayed video feed of the trial is being shown. According to a court spokesperson, at least two reporters have already been barred from covering the trial after breaching the court’s strict prohibitions against recording and taking photographs.
Following this disturbance, Judge Merchan is holding a hearing to address the prosecution’s request that Trump be held in contempt of court and fined a minimum of $3,000 for allegedly violating his gag order. Prosecutors have identified 10 posts on Trump’s social media account and campaign website that they believe breach the order, which prohibits him from making public statements about witnesses in the case.
In their arguments, prosecutors described the posts as a “deliberate flouting” of the court’s order
Prosecutors are seeking the maximum allowable fine of $1,000 for each of the first three alleged violations.
For the remaining seven posts, which date back to the start of jury selection last week, they have not specified the punishment they are seeking.
