Wayne Gretzky is still breaking records 30 years after he retired from professional hockey.
The jersey Gretzky wore during Game 4 of the 1988 Stanley Cup Final sold at auction for jaw dropping $2,806,000 over the weekend, an all-time record for a hockey jersey. The same jersey had previously held the same record, selling for $1.452 million in 2022.
It’s not just any game-worn sweater. Gretzky wore the jersey it during multiple games in that historic 1988 playoff run, including Games 1 and 4 of the Final — a series tied to one of the strangest moments in NHL history.
Game 4 against the Boston Bruins was canceled mid-game after a power outage left Boston Garden in total darkness with the score knotted at 3-3. Two days later, the Oilers came back and finished the job with a 6-3 win to complete the sweep and hand Gretzky his fourth and final Stanley Cup championship.
Through the 1988 playoffs, The Great One put up 43 points in 19 games and easily walked away with the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
That 1988 Cup run marked the end of an era. Shortly after the championship, Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings, closing the book on one of the most dominant dynasties the sport has ever seen. He ultimately played 20 seasons in total before retiring in 1999, when the Hockey Hall of Fame immediately waived its standard waiting period to induct him.
The Great One hasn’t laced up skates in 27 years.
Hockey fans still can’t get enough of him.
