President Donald Trump posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Charlie Kirk on Tuesday, honoring the conservative activist on what would have been his 32nd birthday with the nation’s highest civilian honor.
The ceremony took place in the newly renovated Rose Garden at the White House, where Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, accepted the medal on her late husband’s behalf. Cabinet members, congressional leaders, and conservative media figures filled the audience as Trump presented the award just over a month after Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University.
“Today, we’re here to honor and remember a fearless warrior for liberty, a beloved leader who galvanized the next generation like nobody have ever seen before, and an American patriot of the deepest conviction, the finest quality and the highest caliber, the late, great Charlie Kirk,” Trump said. “Five weeks ago, our nation was robbed of this extraordinary champion.”
Kirk was murdered in cold blood on September 10 while speaking at an outdoor event on the Utah campus, the first stop of Turning Point USA’s American Comeback Tour. Tyler James Robinson, 22, surrendered to authorities the following day and has been charged with murder. Prosecutors announced they will seek the death penalty, stating the attack was politically motivated.
Trump, who returned to Washington in the early morning hours Tuesday after brokering a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Middle East, said he considered postponing the ceremony but decided Kirk’s birthday made the timing essential.
“I was going to call Erika and say, ‘Erika, could you maybe move it to Friday?'” Trump said. “I would not have missed this moment for anything in the world, nothing.”
Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA at age 18 and built it into one of the largest conservative youth organizations in the country. For over a decade, he traveled to college campuses across America, engaging students in debates about faith, freedom, and constitutional principles.
“In the days since Charlie’s killing, we’ve seen exactly why our country so dearly needed his example,” Trump said. “We’ve watched legions of far-left radicals resort to desperate acts of violence and terror because they know that their ideas and arguments are persuading no one. They know that they’re failing. They have the devil’s ideology, and they’re failing, and they know it.”
A military aide read the award citation, which stated: “Charlie Kirk was one of the most influential American political figures of his generation. At just 18 years old, he founded Turning Point USA and grew it into one of the largest conservative youth organizations in the nation. For over a decade, he tirelessly traveled the country, leading a movement to restore respect for our founding principles, reawaken our national identity and inspire a new spirit of religious devotion.”
The citation concluded: “The United States honors him as a martyr for truth and freedom.”
Erika Kirk delivered tearful remarks after accepting the medal, calling it the perfect birthday gift for her husband.
“Thank you, Mr. President, for honoring my husband in such a profound way,” she said. “Charlie always admired your commitment to freedom.”
She shared that her 3-year-old daughter wanted to tell her father: “Happy birthday daddy. I want to give you a stuffed animal. I want you to eat a cupcake with ice cream. And I want you to go have a birthday surprise.”
Erika Kirk spoke of her husband’s faith and conviction, and said he believed freedom required a moral foundation.
“Charlie often said that without God, freedom becomes chaos,” she said. “He believed that liberty could only survive when anchored in truth.”
“The opposite of liberty isn’t law,” Erika Kirk said, quoting her husband.”It’s captivity. And the freest people in the world are those whose hearts belong to Christ.”
Erika Kirk, who now serves as CEO of Turning Point USA, thanked the organization’s staff and student chapters across the country.
“Everything Charlie built lives through you,” she said. “You are the heartbeat of this future and of this movement.”

Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance attended the ceremony, along with Attorney General Pam Bondi, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, FBI Director Kash Patel, and other Cabinet officials. Conservative media personalities including Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Jesse Watters were also in attendance.
Following the ceremony, Trump signed a proclamation in the Oval Office declaring October 14 the National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk. The House and Senate previously approved a resolution marking the date.
Kirk is the first recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in Trump’s second term. The award was established by President Harry Truman in 1945 and is given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to national security, world peace, or significant public endeavors.
Trump credited Kirk with helping mobilize young voters during his campaigns and praised his impact on conservative politics.
