Rapper Killer Mike, whose legal name is Michael Render, has will avoid charges after a physical altercation that led to his arrest at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office has announced that Mike will avoid formal charges after fulfilling community service requirements imposed through the office’s hearing process.
Mike became known as a presence on cable news in 2016, while campaigning for independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont during his presidential run.
The incident, which occurred at the Crypto.com Arena in February, resulted in Mike being escorted from the premises in handcuffs on suspicion of a misdemeanor offense.
However, court documents reveal that no formal charges were ever filed against the rapper based on the discretionary power of Los Angeles city prosecutors, who can opt to resolve certain incidents without pursuing charges, provided the suspect completes specified conditions.
Mike attributed the altercation to an “over-zealous” security guard, an unfortunate turn of events that transpired during what should have been a moment of triumph.
The fight occurred shortly after Mike was awarded three Grammy awards at the ceremony, marking his first win in over two decades.
His victories included best rap performance and best rap song for “Scientists & Engineers,” featuring collaborations with Andre 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane, as well as best rap album for “Michael.”
