Former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff are planning a bicoastal, luxurious lifestyle following their departure from Washington, D.C. — despite Harris having never once had a job in the private sector.
According to reports, Emhoff has accepted a high-paying partner position at law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher while the couple explores some of the most expensive housing in New York City.
One of the apartment’s Harris and her husband have toured is just one block away from Trump Tower in Manhattan, according to reports.
Emhoff toured the $20,000-per-month three-bedroom apartment at the Park Loggia luxury condo building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, arriving with what one witness described as a “convoy of SUVs and a phalanx of Secret Service.”
The couple will maintain their $5.3 million, 3,500-square-foot Brentwood home as their primary residence. The California property, which Emhoff purchased in 2012 before their marriage, features four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and a pool. It narrowly survived the wildfires that burned down much of Los Angeles just weeks ago.
Emhoff’s return to legal practice will split his time between Los Angeles and New York offices. The move marks his return to private practice after serving as second gentleman. He is expected to travel by private jet with Harris as they commute to either coast; one of the worst emitters of carbon in the world, ironic for environmentalists.
The transition comes as Harris, who has worked in the public sector since being elected San Francisco’s district attorney in 2003, contemplates her next steps after being ousted from office by President Donald Trump.
“Her friends, aides and political allies have said… that it is too soon to even contemplate, let alone plan, the next phase of her life,” The New York Times reported.
The couple’s combined net worth is estimated at $8 million, according to Forbes, approximately 20 times that of comparable couples their age. During her vice presidency, Harris earned $235,100 annually — yet has lived a luxury lifestyle of the rich and famous, including an extensive designer wardrobe containing a $3,630 Pamella Roland gown and $3,950 Monique Lhuillier dress.
According to New York magazine, Harris has sought advice from former First Lady Hillary Clinton about coping with her defeat to Trump. Recent reports suggest Harris may explore writing books about her political career and cooking interests.
The couple’s social circle includes numerous Hollywood stars like Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, and Taylor Swift, who all supported Harris’s presidential campaign.
