Iran War’s big winner is… Big Pharma

The Iran war isn’t just disrupting oil… and Big Pharma is profiting from it.

The war is threatening one of the world’s most medically promising natural health compounds, and the clock on the global supply is already ticking.

90% of the world’s saffron supply relies on the Strait of Hormuz trade. Since the war began in February, shipping in the region has halted.

For most people, saffron means paella and risotto. But for a growing body of researchers, it means something far more significant: A weapon against Alzheimer’s disease that has repeatedly held its own in clinical trials against the most prescribed dementia drugs in the world.

That means the Iran war is hurting dementia patients seeking natural remedies… while padding the pockets of Big Pharma.

In a recent landmark 22-week multicenter, double-blind study pitted 30 milligrams of saffron daily against 10 milligrams of donepezil, the most widely prescribed Alzheimer’s drug globally, in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s. After 22 weeks, both groups improved by the same margin on clinical dementia ratings. Saffron matched donepezil point for point.

The critical difference was in side effects: patients on donepezil suffered significantly more vomiting and gastrointestinal complications. Saffron patients tolerated treatment far better.

That natural medicine breakthrough could be in danger.

Analysts say existing stockpiles of saffron in major importing nations will only last another six months, and a genuine shortage could hit global markets as early as late 2026.

“If the conflict in Iran continues, importers may not be able to participate in auctions in Iran or contract shipments by sea or air in early 2027,” Filippo Roda, senior analyst at Arete, said. “In this case, given Iran’s weight in the global market, the risks of product shortages and serious supply difficulties could become real.”

The Iran war also arrives at a moment when medicine prices are spiking globally. British pharmacists warned The Guardian in April that the conflict is driving up the cost of medicines.

The Strait of Hormuz blockade has cascaded through chemical supply lines, raw material costs, and shipping routes that underpin drug manufacturing worldwide.

Big Pharma, meanwhile, entered 2026 in strong financial health. An MMM Online review of Q1 2026 pharmaceutical earnings found the industry solidly “intact” despite the war, and major players have posted strong quarterly numbers.

The conflict that is disrupting natural alternatives like saffron has had no negative effect on Big Pharma profitability.

The saffron shortage is not guaranteed. If peace negotiations succeed and the Strait of Hormuz reopens before the autumn 2026 harvest season, producers may be able to resume exports in time for the early 2027 auction cycle.

If they cannot, global saffron supplies will tighten considerably… and the natural health community’s most promising low-cost, low-side-effect Alzheimer’s intervention could drive consumers right back into Big Pharma’s pocket.
