A massive fight broke out following Monday’s game between college basketball teams from Texas A&M-Commerce and Incarnate Word as the squads began their post-match handshakes.
The cause of the sudden brawl remains unclear. But chaos erupted with members from both squads wildly throwing punches during the traditional post-game ritual.
Footage shows multiple pileups amidst the chaos as stunned coaches and staff try separating brawling players scattered across court.
Broadcasters said a young fan and team manager also got caught up in the violence, suffering blows to the face.
School authorities have yet to confirm injuries. In a joint statement released Monday, Incarnate Word and A&M-Commerce issued apologies “for the behavior exhibited by our respective men’s basketball programs.”
“There is no place in college sports for such actions,” the joint statement said.
“The unsportsmanlike conduct that occurred after the game does not reflect the values of the universities involved, as well as the Southland Conference and their member institutions. The matter is currently being reviewed collectively by the Conference office and both institutions as the safety of our student-athletes, staff, and fans is our primary concern.”
Conference officials said they are reviewing the footage to determine discipline for those involved.
