Fox News star Sean Hannity has officially quit his faith, the longtime conservative commentator announced this week.
Hannity publicly broke with the Catholic Church on his primetime show and declared himself an independent Christian. He said decades of unchecked corruption was his reason for leaving the Catholic faith.
“As of today, I no longer consider myself a Catholic. I am a Christian,” Hannity, 64, revealed. “I left the Catholic church in large part due to the institutionalized corruption, and it was at the parish level, to the bishop level, cardinals, all the way to Rome.”
Hannity said the problems in Catholicism were systemic and never properly addressed by Church leadership.
“Frankly, not only unchecked, they never fully corrected it or dealt with it,” he said.
Hannity also took direct aim at the Vatican’s direction under the current Pope.
“Others at the Vatican have totally lost the true meaning of the Bible and its teachings,” Hannity added.
The announcement came amid a growing feud between President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV over the U.S. war in Iran.

Pope Leo had publicly condemned the U.S.-Israeli war against the repressive Iranian Islamic regime, prompting Trump to hit back on Truth Social.
“Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,” Trump previously wrote. “He talks about ‘fear’ of the Trump Administration, but doesn’t mention the FEAR that the Catholic Church, and all other Christian Organizations, had during COVID when they were arresting priests, ministers, and everybody else, for holding Church Services, even when going outside, and being ten and even 20 feet apart.”
Pope Leo fired back the following day.
“I have no fear of the Trump administration or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do,” he told reporters.
Hannity sided with Trump, and said Pope Leo was “seemingly enjoying a public fight” with the president.
Despite walking away from the Church, Hannity acknowledged that his Catholic upbringing left a lasting mark on his life.
“Like millions of Americans, I was raised Catholic. I went to Catholic school for 12 years,” he said. “I even attended a seminary in high school, studied theology, Latin, went to Mass daily. I got a lot out of it.”
“My parents were devout Catholics, and while I wasn’t particularly engaged at the time in the teachings of the Catholic church, as a young person, it certainly entered my consciousness,” Hannity said. The Catholic faith “made me a better person and has been a positive force in my life in so many ways.”
