On Tuesday, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter was found guilty of three felonies, all related to lying on an application to purchase a firearm. On the application, Hunter denied any drug abuse, but then he released a memoir chronicling his crack cocaine addiction from around that time.
Some conservatives expect Hunter to appeal the conviction… or solicit a presidential pardon from his father after the election.
Donald Trump’s presidential campaign implied that, as president, Trump would preclude any possibility of a presidential pardon for Hunter Biden.
“Crooked Joe Biden’s reign over the Biden Family Criminal Empire is all coming to an end on November 5th,” the campaign said in a statement.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., has been investigating the president’s family for the last two years as chair of the House Oversight Committee.
Comer called the verdict only “a step toward accountability.” However, accountability won’t be finished “until the Department of Justice investigates everyone involved in the Bidens’ corrupt influence peddling schemes,” Comer said.
Defense attorney Abbe Lowell says his team is “naturally disappointed” by Hunter Biden’s guilty verdict. Lowell said in a statement that the defense attorneys respect the jury process, and he added that his team would continue pursuing all legal challenges available.
“Through all he has been through in his recovery, including this trial, Hunter has felt grateful for and blessed by the love and support of his family,” Lowell said.
Not only is Hunter’s legal team mounting an appeal, but Hunter is already thanking his family for “love and support.”
“I am more grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from Melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than I am disappointed by the outcome,” Hunter Biden wrote in a statement following his guilty verdict. “Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time.”
Plus, President Biden has already altered his routine. After the verdict, the White House canceled press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s scheduled briefing. The White House also announced Biden’s plans to spend the evening in Delaware with Hunter and other family members.
Biden is scheduled to speak at a conference hosted by the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund in Washington. From there, he’s traveling to Wilmington before leaving Wednesday for the Group of Seven leaders conference in Italy.
At the conference, Biden is expected to tout his administration’s efforts to toughen enforcement of gun laws. In other words, he’s set to speak about the exact kinds of crime for which his son was convicted.
That sounds awkward, even for Biden.
