The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 5-2 in Wednesday night’s season opener in South Korea. This was Major League Baseball’s first ever game played in South Korea.
Shohei Ohtani, in his Dodgers debut after signing a $700 million contract, went 2-for-5 with an RBI single. His hit capped a four-run rally for the Dodgers in the 8th inning.
Trailing 2-1 entering the 8th, the Dodgers used late-inning heroics to take the lead following an unfortuante error by Padres first baseman Jake Cronenworth. Mookie Betts and Ohtani added RBI singles that inning.
Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow allowed 2 runs on 2 hits over 5 innings, walking 4. Yu Darvish started for the Padres, giving up 1 unearned run on 2 hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Xander Bogaerts had an RBI single for the Padres in the 3rd inning. Luis Campusano drove in a run on a double play grounder in the 4th.
Daniel Hudson (1-0) got the win in relief for the Dodgers. Evan Phillips earned the save. Jhony Brito (0-1) took the loss for the Padres.
This game featured the first batting order with 3 former MVPs hitting 1-2-3 since 1983 with Betts, Ohtani and Freddie Freeman for the Dodgers.
In the first MLB game with the new shortened pitch clock with runners on base, Padres pitchers were called for 4 violations.
