Fox News host Sean Hannity dropped an unexpected 2028 election bombshell from President Donald Trump.
Trump will not attempt another White House run in 2028… but he’s still leaving the door open.
“I don’t think it’s gonna happen. That’s my guess. I haven’t really talked to him about it,” Hannity told Katie Miller on her podcast, a clip of which was obtained by the New York Post.
The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution bars any person from being elected president more than twice, which would likely make a third Trump term unconstitutional. Hannity acknowledged the legal barrier but stopped short of ruling anything out entirely.
“I think the Constitution is clear now. Look, who knows? With Donald Trump you just don’t know. I mean, the rules change,” Hannity said.
Trump himself has done little to shut down the speculation. In January he posted on Truth Social: “RECORD NUMBERS ALL OVER THE PLACE! SHOULD I TRY FOR A FOURTH TERM?” His campaign has sold “Trump 2028” hats and T-shirts bearing the slogan “Rewrite the Rules.” When asked in a January NewsNation interview about who could carry on his legacy, Trump said the GOP has “a good bench” and “some very talented people,” but declined to name names.
Vice President JD Vance has emerged as an early frontrunner for the 2028 Republican nomination. In a November appearance on Hannity’s Fox News show, Vance admitted he had thought about a future run but was focused on the present.
“Whenever I think about that, I try to put it out of my head and remind myself the American people elected me to do a job right now,” Vance said. He added that he planned to discuss the question with Trump after the 2026 midterms.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also frequently mentioned as a potential 2028 contender. Vance called Rubio his “best friend” in the administration, though he acknowledged the two could eventually find themselves as political rivals.
“If Marco eventually runs for president, then we can cross that bridge when we come to it,” Vance said.
Hannity used the Miller interview to take a shot at the mainstream press as well.
“The difference between me and them — I also say I’m a conservative and I’ll tell you who I’m going to vote for,” he said. “They claim to be journalists. They’re full of s**t. They’re not journalists.”
