Los Angeles police detained two men outside Vice President Kamala Harris’s Brentwood home early Sunday morning, as the uncontrolled California wildfires threaten to burn down the wealthy Los Angeles neighborhood containing thousands of multimillion-dollar mansions.
The wildfires have already claimed Hunter Biden’s mansion. Now, the fires are heading towards Harris’ home.
The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a potential burglary call at Harris’s Bundy Drive residence around 4:40 a.m., during the mandatory 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew imposed to stop looting.
Nearly 30 people were arrested over the weekend around Los Angeles, including one man impersonating a firefighter, police said.
“They likely had no idea where they were,” one law enforcement source told KNBC about the men detained outside Harris’ home. The men were not found inside Harris’s property, which the U.S. Secret Service guards with help from California Highway Patrol and LAPD’s Metropolitan Division Dignitary Protection Detail.
The Palisades Fire has now burned 23,707 acres and is only 11% contained, according to CAL Fire’s latest update. More than 150,000 residents remain under evacuation orders.
LAFD Chief Kristin Crowley publicly criticized Democratic Mayor Karen Bass’s handling of the crisis.
“We are screaming to be properly funded to make sure that our firefighters can do their jobs so that we can serve the community,” Crowley told Fox affiliate KTTV.
“Since Day One, we’ve identified huge gaps in regard to our service delivery and our ability of our firefighters’ boots on the ground to do their jobs,” Crowley added.
The fire has destroyed more than 5,000 home in six days and continues to burn out of control. The Los Angeles County medical examiner reported 16 deaths, including five from the Palisades Fire.
Bass faces mounting criticism over the city’s response.
More than 95,000 people have signed an online petition demanding her recall for “gross mismanagement” of the crisis.
Firefighters from five states and Mexico have joined local crews battling the blaze. While Santa Ana winds temporarily decreased from their initial 100 mph peaks, officials expect gusts to intensify this week, hampering containment efforts.
The fire has burned down numerous celebrity homes and is threatening the luxury Brentwood neighborhood, including those belonging to LeBron James, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Harrison Ford, as it continues its path of destruction through Los Angeles’s coastal hillsides.
