Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is trying to restrict the testimony of her former special prosecutor and lover, Nathan Wade, as he prepares to appear before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
Willis’s actions have raised questions about attempts to conceal information related to the high-profile election interference case against former President Donald Trump.
In a letter dated October 11, released by the House Judiciary Committee, Willis explained why she wanted Wade silenced.
“I am concerned that your demand for Mr. Wade’s testimony would force him to improperly divulge confidential information that is protected,” by her office. This directive from Willis extends to “all legal protections and privileges related to information that he possesses about ongoing criminal prosecutions.”
The House Judiciary GOP, skeptical of Willis’s motives, posted on X (formerly Twitter): “FANI WILLIS demands NATHAN WADE not answer questions at his deposition tomorrow before the Judiciary Committee. What is she trying to hide?”
Willis’s attempts to control Wade’s testimony come in the wake of a scandal that rocked her office earlier this year.
Wade was forced to resign from the Trump case after his sexual relationship with Willis came to light, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest. A Fulton County Superior Court judge had given an ultimatum for either Wade or Willis to step down, citing the “appearance of impropriety.”
Despite Willis’s efforts to limit Wade’s testimony, he has shown a willingness to discuss the matter. In a prior interview, Wade stated, “What I believe is this whole conversation is a distraction, that’s all. It’s a tool to stop the train, slow down the inevitable which is the trial of the defendant’s name in the election interference case.”
Chairman Jim Jordan, R-O.H., and the House Judiciary Committee have been pursuing this investigation. Last month, they even resorted to requesting assistance from U.S. Marshals to locate Wade after he failed to appear for a previously scheduled hearing.
Willis’s attempts to silence Wade extend beyond this single testimony. She has also raised concerns about Wade potentially violating State Bar of Georgia rules governing attorney conduct, further complicating his ability to speak freely.
