Sunday’s 69th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony was advertised as the most politically charged event of the summer, and the Hollywood liberal elites lined up to get in on the action.
Across America, though, viewers had enough. While host Stephen Colbert and guests went on unfunny tirades about President Donald Trump, more Americans than ever turned off their television.
Monday, initial reports are showing that the Emmy’s hyper-liberal political stance seriously hurt ratings. In fact, CBS may have scored the lowest-ever ratings in the program nearly 70-year history.
Ouch.
“According to metered market data posted by Programming Insider, Sunday’s 69th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony drew an 8.2 overnight household rating. The rating trails the 8.4 household figure drawn last year,” Headline Planet reported. Last year was the previous all-time low for ratings for the award show.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “That means that the final tally for the 2017 Emmys, hosted by Stephen Colbert on CBS, is on track to slip below the 11.3 million viewers (and a mere 2.8 rating among adults 18-49) that tuned in during 2016.”
In other words, 2016’s award show ratings was the previous all-time low… and Sunday’s results look worse. If the overnight numbers hold, Sunday’s program would be the newest all-time low.
The Emmys even scored significantly less eyeballs than the NFL game on at the time — who are suffering their own ratings decline. NBC’s Sunday Night Football received a 12.6 overnight rating.
Since becoming highly politicized, the Emmys viewership has declined steadily, and ratings for the ceremony has hit new lows every year since 2015.
Is anyone outside of liberal Hollywood surprised?
