Doomsday Plane appears, spawns huge conspiracy theories

The Air Force’s secretive Boeing E-4B Nightwatch touched down at Los Angeles International Airport over the weekend, the first time the aircraft has landed at LAX in its 51-year operational history.

And the appearance of the so-called “Doomsday Plane” sparked conspiracy theories. The timing comes just days after U.S. military operations in Venezuela.

“WAR IMMINENT?” wrote one social media account after the sighting. “For the first time in its more than 50 year operational history, the Boeing 747 E 4B Nightwatch, widely known as the Doomsday Plane, was seen at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday evening. The rare appearance of this aircraft has sparked concern among observers.”

The Air Force’s Nightwatch plane serves as a mobile survival command center designed to keep the U.S. government operational in the event of a nuclear war. The aircraft is built to withstand nuclear and electromagnetic pulse attacks and can stay airborne for 12 hours without refueling, with the capability to refuel in mid-air to extend flight time indefinitely.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was aboard the aircraft when it landed Thursday night. He traveled to Southern California as part of his “Arsenal of Freedom” tour aimed at boosting military recruiting and meeting with defense contractors.

Conservative social media personality Laura Loomer, who was recently added to the Defense Department press corps, also joined the flight.

The E-4B Nightwatch is one of four such aircraft operated by the Air Force. According to records available to the public, the plane can accommodate up to 111 people and features six functional areas on its main deck: a command work area, conference room, briefing room, operations team work area, communications area, and a rest area.

“The E-4B, a militarized version of the Boeing 747-200, is a four-engine, swept-wing, long-range, high-altitude airplane capable of refueling in flight,” according to the U.S. Air Force fact sheet.

The aircraft departed LAX around 2:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a C-17 transport plane.

“The National Airborne Operations Center has several missions, both operational and training, which require travel to a wide variety of locations, both within the United States and around the world,” an Air Force spokesperson said about the planes appearance at LAX.

Los Angeles journalist Jeff Vaughn said the flight was part of the Trump administration’s industrial tour of the U.S.

“During this time of heightened tensions in and outside the US, the Boeing E-4B Nightwatch, also known as the the ‘Doomsday Plane,’ is on a so-called ‘industrial tour.’ Its first stop: Los Angeles with a landing at LAX. I’m told one of the two Doomsday planes will be permanently stationed at Camp Spring, near the White House, moved from its former home at Offutt AFB in Nebraska.”

Built in the 1970s during the Cold War, the E-4B is designed to serve as an operations center for the president, defense secretary, and Joint Chiefs of Staff if U.S. command structure is destroyed or compromised during a war.

“The conduct of E-4B operations encompasses all phases of the threat spectrum,” the Air Force states. “In case of national emergency or destruction of ground command and control centers, the aircraft provides a highly survivable command, control, and communications center to direct U.S. forces, execute emergency war orders, and coordinate actions by civil authorities.”

What’s believed to be the first appearance in its 51-year flying history, the Boeing 747 E-4B Nightwatch, also known as the “Doomsday Plane,” showed up at LAX during Thursday’s Airline Videos Live broadcast and will most likely be the highlight of 2026! pic.twitter.com/wvc39ypRnP
