On Friday, a state court in New York found former President Donald Trump liable for fraud, and it ordered him to pay $355 million.
The court acknowledged Trump’s freedom to appeal the ruling, but before an appeal, it also required him to pay around $400 as a bond.
Now, Trump’s team has announced his intent to appeal until the bitter end. The former president is already preparing to post the bond defense lawyer Alina Habba said Monday on Fox News.
“Within 30 days, even if we choose to appeal this, which we will, we have to post the bond, which is the full amount and some, and we will be prepared to do that,” Habba told Martha McCallum of Fox News.
Trump’s team had already announced his intent to appeal. Habba herself said in a statement after Friday’s ruling, “Given the grave stakes, we trust that the Appellate Division will overturn this egregious verdict and end this relentless persecution against my clients.”
Trump’s legal team made headlines Tuesday for promising to pay the bond. Although known as a billionaire, Trump faced some doubts about his ability to pay the hefty legal fees.
Habba sidestepped questions about possibly holding a fire sale to pay Trump’s bond. She told McCallum simply that there would be “no mayhem” at the Trump organization.
For the bond, the court is requiring Trump to pay a bond of almost $400 million, comprised of both the $354 fine and more than $40 million in interest.
New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat who brought the case, says the interest “will continue to increase every single day” until payment.
Trump has called James “corrupt,” and his allies have accused her of ulterior motives. The former president himself went on Truth Social to call the ruling “an illegal, unAmerican judgment against me, my family, and my tremendous business.”
In a separate case earlier this year, another New York court found Trump liable for defamation and ordered him to pay $83 million to the author E. Jean Carroll.
Habba said Monday, “What they’re trying to do between this case, between my last case is put him out of business. It’s not going to work. Number one. Number two, what they’re doing is a scare tactic. Unfortunately, they picked the wrong guy to pick on in my opinion, because he’s strong, he’s resilient, and he happens to have a lot of cash.”
