Former President Donald Trump, the clear frontrunner of the 2024 Republican presidential primary, was asked this week his potential running mates during an interview with Breitbart — and Trump made a stunning announcement.
Trump told the conservative news outlet that it doesn’t really matter who his vice presidential pick nominee ends up being in the upcoming election.
Voters choose the president, not the presidential ticket, Trump predicted.
“If you study the history of presidential runs, a vice president has never made a difference — which is surprising,” Trump said.
“It’s a one-night story, and then they’re back to a regular evening,” he said about the average voter. “They’re voting for the president. They’re not voting for the vice president.”
“There has — not that I can think of — never been a vice president that’s made much of a difference in terms of nomination and in terms of even winning the election,” Trump said.
However, Trump did say that the Republican Party had a deep bench heading into the election — but offered no further insights into his potential pick.
“So, look, we have some very good people — the same people you know,” Trump told Breitbart. “They’re good people.”
“We have some people that would like me to run with certain others,” he continued. “Maybe I can’t do that because you have to go with what your gut tells you.”
“Winning is very important. Look, if we don’t win this, I think this country is finished. I actually do,” Trump said.
There has been rumblings among Republican Party insiders that Trump may choose the Republican presidential candidate in second place, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, as a “unity ticket” running mate.
The idea was panned by Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump, Jr. during a recent interview with Newsmax.
“I would go to great lengths to make sure that that doesn’t happen,” Trump Jr. told the conservative outlet.
