Former President Donald Trump knows how to grab a headline, and teased that he’d selected his vice presidential running mate on Wednesday in the middle of the Republican presidential primary debate he had skipped.
But there was one small issue.
Trump told Fox News during a televised town hall that he’d officially selected a running mate, but said it wasn’t time to announce the name yet.
He said an announcement would come on “another show sometime” soon.
“Let me just ask you a follow up on that about who would be in your cabinet – in your administration. If you are the nominee, which I know you expect to be, who would be in the running for vice president?” Fox News host Martha MacCallum asked.
“Well, I can’t tell you that really,” Trump said before hinting that the decision was made.
“I mean, I know who it’s going to be,” he said.
“You could give us a hint,” Fox News’ Bret Brier asked.
“We’ll do another show sometime,” Trump replied to laughter.
“What about the people you’ve run against?” asked MacCallum. “Would you be open to mending fences with any of them?”
“Oh sure, I will,” Trump said. “I’ve already started to like [Chris] Christie better.”
Christie had suspended his longshot 2024 Republican presidential campaign just hours earlier. MacCallum teased that Trump could consider “Christie for Vice President.”
“I don’t see it. That would be an upset — Christie for Vice President,” Trump replied.
