The ex-marine Daniel Penny is facing manslaughter charges following a viral video of him subduing a homeless man that had reportedly been threatening passengers. The homeless man was known to police, and died while Penny subdued him with the help of other passengers.
On Twitter, Gov. Ron DeSantis called Penny a Good Samaritan… and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., had a total meltdown.

“We must defeat the Soros-Funded DAs, stop the Left’s pro-criminal agenda, and take back the streets for law abiding citizens. We stand with Good Samaritans like Daniel Penny,” DeSantis tweeted earlier this month, referring to liberal donor George Soros. “Let’s show this Marine… America’s got his back.”
He sent his followers to an internet campaign meant to cover Penny’s legal fees, after the Manhattan DA charged him with manslaughter.
“Vets look out for other vets,” DeSantis added, according to the New York Post. “What we can’t have in our society is inmates running the asylum.”
However, Ocasio-Cortez took issue with the use of the phrase “Good Samaritan.”
On Friday, the congresswoman was attending the funeral for Jordan Neely, the disturbed man who died. An unidentified reporter asked her to comment on “Governor DeSantis calling Penny a good Samaritan,” according to the NY Post.
“I think he should read a Bible,” a furious Ocasio-Cortez reportedly said, before boarding a black SUV with tinted windows.
In the Gospel of Luke, a man from Samaria finds a beaten-up traveler left for dead alongside the road. The Samaritan becomes the first of three passersby to aide this total stranger.
The Good Samaritan has since become a symbol for anyone taking an affirmative step to help total strangers.
Other attendees, besides just Ocasio-Cortez, were also discussing DeSantis at the funeral.
“A good Samaritan helps those in trouble,” Rev. Al Sharpton said in the eulogy. “They don’t choke him out.”
Daniel Penny was charged by the Manhattan district attorney last week. Penny’s lawyers say he was acting to protect himself and other passengers after Neely made threatening statements.

Ocasio-Cortez has previously lectured at GOP politicians to read the Bible.
“Tell me you’ve never read the Bible without telling me you’ve never read the Bible,” Ocasio-Cortez told Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., in 2021. Ocasio-Cortez added, mockingly, “Oh you’ve read the Bible? Name 10 plagues.”
