Democrats are vowing to impeach President Donald Trump, according to Rep. Al Green, D-T.X., who has surged in popularity among liberals after disrupting Trump’s joint address to Congress in February.
The Democratic congressman chose at Saturday’s anti-Trump “Hands Off!” rally in Washington, D.C. to tell Democratic supporters that he would file articles of impeachment within 30 days.
“We need a Senate that will convict him this time, and I want you to know, from my heart, from my heart, I understand that he is a Goliath,” Green told the crowd, wearing a shirt emblazoned with “Censured, Not Silenced” – a reference to his bipartisan rebuke by the House in February.
“For every Goliath, there is a David. And I want you to know, Mr. President, this David is going to bring articles of impeachment against you within the next 30 days. I’m coming for you.”
The Constitution requires impeachment be based on “high crimes and misdemeanors,” and Green has not explained how he seeks to charge Trump.
The Texas Democrat has a long history of failed impeachment attempts against Trump. In February, Green announced on the House floor he would file impeachment articles after Trump suggested the United States should take over the Gaza Strip. Green reiterated this stance at Saturday’s rally, insisting Gaza “is not going to become a resort. There must be a home for the Palestinian people.”
Green was censured by the House on February 2 in a 224-198-2 vote after he disrupted Trump’s joint address to Congress. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-L.A., warned Green several times about his behavior before ultimately having him removed from the chamber as he “ranted and raved about Medicare.”
The White House quickly dismissed Green’s latest impeachment threat.
“Trump’s position is clear: he will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries,” Assistant Press Secretary Liz Huston said. She added that “the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”
Republicans have reportedly discussed removing Green from his committee assignments, along with other Democrats who joined him in disruptive behavior during the censure vote. In retaliation, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, D-P.A., has pushed to censure Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-C.O., for comments about Green “shaking his pimp cane at President Trump.”
