Fox News contributor Dan Bongino took to the mainstage of the Conservative Political Action Conference 2020 (CPAC) on Friday with former House Intelligence Committee Chair Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif. for a discussion on “spygate” and Deep State corruption.
During that discussion, Nunes told the crowd about new developments from the origins of the Russian investigation and how the hoax originated.
Bongino and Nunes discussed Joseph Mifsud, the Maltese professor who they agreed is the “ground zero” of the special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation into President Donald Trump.
Mifsud is reportedly the one who allegedly claimed that the Russians had dirt on then-2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. “Thousands of emails,” he said at the time.
As TIME writes, Mifsud has not been seen since October 2017 — and Nunes and Bongino discussed how, and why, Mifsud was able to disappear so easily. According to Nunes, intelligence officials were busy questioning Trump campaign aid George Papadopolous instead of pursuing Mifsud.
Nunes questioned why the FBI questioned Papadopolous instead of going straight to find Mifsud, even when he was in Washington, D.C.
“Someone should’ve gone to find this person,” Nunes added.
“Now he’s gone with the wind,” Bongino said.
He and Nunes also noted that Mueller’s investigation began with zero official information.
More specifically, Nunes said that the investigation lacked the “five eyes” stamp of approval — referring to the coalition of five countries (Australia, U.K., New Zealand, Canada and the U.S.) which combat international crime.
In short, U.S. intelligence officials opened up an investigation on heresay.
The two also discussed former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who most recently had his sentencing for lying to the FBI.
“Do you believe Flynn was a target?” Bongino asked Nunes bluntly.
Nunes didn’t say targeted, but that Flynn was mistreated unfairly for one reason.
Flynn wanted to “empty out the swamp of intelligence folks that are in D.C.,” Nunes said. The California congressman elaborated further, saying that Flynn aimed to downsize the number of U.S. intelligence officials.
“They had a real reason to get rid of Flynn,” Nunes said.
“I know it because he told me.”
But Bongino had one last question for Nunes, one that had the crowd in a frenzy…
“When are any of these Deep State officials going to jail?” he asked.
Nunes replied that he has “faith” that U.S. Attorney John Durham will get to the bottom of the investigation into the origins of the Russian hoax — and bring justice to D.C.
