The controversy surrounding the removal of Confederate statues had President Donald Trump asking Americans, ” You have to ask yourself where does it stop?”
“Is it George Washington next week, and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after?” Trump pondered.
According to a CNN commentator Angela Rye: Yes.
Taking down the statues of our nation’s Founding Fathers is exactly what should be next, Rye angrily said.
American history, she claims, is not glorious and should not be celebrated.
“We have to get to the heart of the problem here and the heart is the way many of us were taught American history,” Rye said in a heated debate that aired on CNN Thursday.
“George Washington was a slave owner! We need to call them out for what they are, whether we think they were protecting American freedom or not. He wasn’t protecting my freedom!” Rye, a former executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus, said to the panel.
“My ancestors weren’t deemed human beings to him. And so to me, I don’t care if it’s a George Washington statue or a Thomas Jefferson statue or a Robert E. Lee statue; they all need to come down!”
Rye was interrupted by The Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avalon, who warned her against proving Trump right. This made Rye visibly angry.
“I’m going to finish my point,” she yelled.
She then went on a rant regarding how America’s history was one of white supremacy and implied that Washington should only be remembered for being a slave owner.
