Nearly 100 protesters were arrested during a demonstration calling on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to block the sale of thousands of U.S. bombs to Israel.
Led by the antiwar group Jewish Voice for Peace, the mob of hundreds initially attempted to storm and stage a sit-in inside the Manhattan offices of Schumer and his fellow New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, whom they accused of helping Israel’s intensifying attacks in Lebanon against radical Islamic terror groups. The groups are against the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
After the mob was stopped by security from successfully storming inside the building, they turned their anger on those outside. Demonstrators blocked traffic outside, chanting “fund people, not bombs” as they were arrested and loaded onto three buses.
Some held signs calling out the New York Democrats, while calling for an end to the Iran War.
“On the brink of a Senate vote to block weapons to Israel, 300 New Yorkers are risking arrest in a mass anti-war sit-in to demand that Senators Schumer and Gillibrand fund people, not bombs,” an Instagram post by the organization read.
“Schumer and Gillibrand, listen to your constituents. New Yorkers say: End this horrific war and stop arming Israel now”, added the organization.

Among the 90 people taken into custody were notorious whistleblower Chelsea Manning, actor Hari Nef, and New York City Council Member Alexa Aviles, according to a JVP spokesperson.
The demonstration focused on a set of bills introduced by fellow Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) that would block the sale of more than $600 million in arms to Israel.
Similar measures introduced by Sanders in the past have failed. But the most recent effort this past summer drew support from more than half of Senate Democrats amid widespread hunger and suffering in Gaza.
Schumer and Gillibrand were not among them, according to the Associated Press.
However, more than three dozen Democrats supported an effort by Sanders on Wednesday to block arms sales to Israel, signaling a growing discontent in the party with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the wars in Gaza and Iran.
The two resolutions to block U.S. sales of bulldozers and bombs to Israel were opposed by all Republicans and rejected 40-59 and 36-63.
Schumer’s office responded to the violent protest, telling USA Today: “Senator Schumer thinks Trump’s reckless war against Iran is a disaster that needs to end immediately.”
“The Senator has led the charge to make the Senate vote three times – and another this week – on a War Powers Resolution to stop Trump’s reckless war, which the Republicans have blocked each time.”
